Blessings do not come in bite-sized portions.
Pleasures do, but blessings come in years,
The joint gifts of our choices and our fortunes,
Harvests we have watered with our tears.
With gratitude for all we have been given,
And for the fruits of our unstinting labor,
We mix into the bread of life the leaven
Of love for who or what has shown us favor.
How beautiful that love, and yet how hard
It is in times of trouble to sustain!
One ought not turn from it when dealt a card
That turns one's years of happiness to pain.
Grief flows from the gifts of love and feeling,
The bitter balm that long applied brings healing.
