Katie and Brant Have a Middle-School Crush
Katie and Brant have a middle-school crush,
A love that's not love yet, but feels like a sky
That out of the blue just came wandering by,
Immersing their hearts in a heavenly hush.
Each savors the gift without asking the cost
As the days become weeks and then months without end;
Nor do they consider how much they might spend,
Depending on youth to replace what is lost.
Brant and Katie are wise in their bliss,
Respecting the force that brings them such joy,
Aware of the fate of a young girl and boy:
Not ready to move much beyond that first kiss
Though gripped by the hunger for all they must miss.
