So may you celebrate yourself this season,
Embracing all the things you do for love.
A teacher does many, of course, though days may prove
So long and hard one rues one's choice - with reason.
Open, then, your heart to what you do,
Noticing the diamonds in the dross,
Sensing that a gain can seem a loss,
Given the tough hand that's given you.
Remember that each child's a miracle,
Elusively at times, but rightly seen,
Exactly what might drab routines redeem --
The sudden grace that makes life beautiful.
If you are a sculptor, what you make
Need not, till long gone from your shop, take shape,
Giving to the world a bit of you,
Some sliver of the good you daily do.
