T here is no hope for those who hope too much,
H ere to build a world where evils cease,
E ager to embrace a world at peace,
Y earning for Utopia, as such.
E ven so, no truth ought such hope crush,
A s cynicism has the longer lease,
R elying on self-interest to increase,
O ffering a prickly underbrush.
F or hopeless hope has much to recommend it.
T he best need not eviscerate the good.
H ope of "should" can clear a path to "would,"
E ven though it breaks the heart to tend it.
D ragons are the dreamers to defend it,
R esisting blame, as only dragons could,
A ware their role might be misunderstood,
G iven that their dream's best chance might end it.
O n hopeless hope depends all compromise.
N or ought one undermine it, were one wise.
