How often does the violin say thank you
To the virtuoso filling it with life?
Or the trumpet praise the trumpeter for cutting
Through sweet silence like a silver knife?

Or the voice sing to the mind in gratitude
For giving it the graceful gift of song?
Or the body pay obeisance to the heart?
Or the house, the builder, for foundations strong?

How often does the choir cue the master,
Voices blending like a single, living bell,
As, ringing with a grateful, joyful sadness,
Your instrument now bids you fond farewell.
